Session Abstract

Title: Basic Understanding of Networking and How to Secure Connected Medical Devices

Abstract: Connected medical devices are becoming more prevalent in hospitals, as they offer benefits such as real-time data collection, remote monitoring, and personalized treatment. However, these devices also pose significant cybersecurity risks, as they can be hacked, tampered with, or infected with malware, compromising patient safety and privacy. In this seminar, I will provide an overview of the basic concepts and principles of networking, such as protocols, topologies, and architectures. I will also explain how to secure connected medical devices using best practices and standards, such as:

Using good password practices and encryption for your devices and routers
Keeping your devices within your physical control and only connecting them to authorized devices and software
Buying medical devices only from vendors that value cybersecurity and fix any network vulnerabilities
Implementing HIPAA compliance and zero-trust methods to protect patient data
Building in security from the early stages of design and using a security solution that protects firmware, data, communication, and device from cyberattacks
By attending this seminar, you will gain a basic understanding of networking and how to secure connected medical devices in hospitals. You will also learn how to identify and prevent common types of cyberattacks and their consequences.
